As you can see from my last review, I've been eating at Hen House for over 10 years now and I'm updating and upgrading my review. We ate there when they were by Wholesome Choice. And I've been eating here since they moved to their new location. I guess it's really not that new anymore. I have to add that they make the best Kaleh Pache (sheep head and hoof) in town. I've tried them all and this is the best especially that you get it with two freshly baked bread.

So hubs and I were out and about on a Saturday evening and were hungry for dinner. It was already nearing 9:00p, and my gosh, a lot of places close early these days! Luckily, we found places to eat around UCI (of course, college town!). This place is open laaaaate. Til 3:00am on Saturdays! This is located in the Campus Plaza, at the corner of Campus Drive and California Avenue. There's a lot of places to eat here, like Sgt. Pepper's Pizza, KY Sushi, The Habit, and Del Taco. There was a line out the door at the ice cream shop, Saffron & Rose. There's also Albertsons and Starbucks (no drive-thru, but open til 10:00p, another college town perk). We were greeted by the owner(?) who was very friendly. He really wanted us to try the meatballs, which were a special menu item (for that day?) that he personally made and was very enthusiastic about. So we ordered that ($19.77), the combo chicken plate ($23.97), the combo beef plate ($31.97), the beef cutlet sandwich ($16.97), and a side of hummus ($7.97). The sandwich was for the kiddo waiting at home. While we were waiting, he gave us hot tea in a teapot, which was good. The food took a while though. We probably waited about 20-25 minutes? We took everything home and immediate chowed down as we were starving. Everything was pretty good. The beef combo came with ground beef (beef koubideh), beef chunks (beef chengeh), rice and grilled vegetables (tomato, bell peppers and onions). The chicken combo is the same in that it came with ground chicken (chicken koubideh), chicken chunks (chicken barg) and rice, but there was only a split tomato on it. Not sure if they forgot to add the bell peppers and onions, or if they put extra in the beef combo instead...I checked the posted pics on Yelp, and it seems like the grilled veggies served are not consistent so who knows. The beef and chicken chunks were tender, not dry. The ground beef and chicken were moist, too, but felt a bit drier compared to the chunks. I wish they had a combo of chicken and beef chunks... The kofteh meatballs were ginormous, and there were two served in a stew, and came with two pieces of ginormous flatbread. At the time of ordering, we misunderstood the owner(?) and thought the meatballs were more of a side order...little did we know that it was a full meal (which now makes sense at $20 per order). The meatballs were tender and tasted good in the stew. I still liked the kebabs better, just my personal taste. The flatbread was yummy! It was doughy and chewy with some crispy areas towards the center. I ate it as is and with the hummus (which was also delicious).

Am I literally craving this again right now even though we just had it last night? Yes. If you haven't had a meal here run, don't walk, cause it's that freaking good. We felt like we were at a relatives' place (in a good way lol) having a home cooked meal with kind service. It's an order at the counter and seat yourself casual typa place but the gentlemen who took our order was so hospitable. And the food--omg--the meats were so tender, the salad so fresh with a delicious variety of pickles and yellow peppers which we appreciated. The yogurt and cucumber sauce with the kabob is a must. Oh, AND they open late night? It's just like, they really don't miss.

This place was absolutely amazing! Very organized and clean. Their menu has so many options and the service is fast. The food was incredibly tasty and fresh. I had the beef koobideh, a side of naan, and tried the abali yogurt soda. We also had the complementary hot tea. Loved it here!
